Narrowing the gap between business and academia

USAID Labor Market Project, implemented by CARANA, and Career Services firm JobTiger, organized a round table titled “Public-private partnership development. University career centers and the business”. The event, held on September 21st in Sofia, was attended by more than 50 representatives of the business, academia, and media.

A focal point in the round table discussion was the benefits of building and strengthening partnerships that establish effective linkages between the business and higher educational institutions. The USAID-fostered partnership of business with academia remedies the dissonance between the skills sought by employers and the output of the higher educational system.

Among the major initial results of the public-private partnership are the launch of 11 University Career Centers, commitment to establish 7 additional centers by mid 2006, and declaration of employers and universities to work closer together.

A major step towards ensuring the sustainability of the partnership is the announced at the event establishment of Business for Education Foundation (BEF). The main goal of the BEF is to accumulate and disburse financial and technical assistance from business to career centers.
