CARANA Press Release
CARANA helps Palestine with first shipment of agricultural exports to the United States
Arlington, Virginia March 31, 2008 - Under the auspices of USAID's Palestinian Agribusiness Partnership Activity, which CARANA is implementing, the first commercial shipment of Palestinian produce to the United States arrived by air cargo through JFK International Airport in New York.
The herb shipment originated from a known fresh herb trader in Tubas and passed through Israeli and Jordanian security at the Allenby Bridge border crossing on its way to Queen Alia International Airport Airport in Amman. The bridge is currently the only direct exit point for West Bank Palestinians into Jordan.
CARANA is promoting the known trader facility, consistent with international best practices in security management and trade facilitation, to create an environment in the West Bank that promotes and recognizes companies that can effectively exercise supply-chain security measures. Trade security is about persuading the public and private sector to incorporate security precautions. Consequently, enhanced trade security will strengthen trade facilitation.
The shipment consists of herbs, including tarragon and chives, grown in greenhouses at the Tubas Herb Farm. The fresh produce will be available to U.S. consumers through one the largest U.S. purveyors of fresh herbs, baby greens and specialty produce to grocery stores, food service distributors and wholesalers.
