West Africa Trade Hub Program Extended and Expanded
by USAID
Arlington, VA—The CARANA Corporation’s
West Africa Trade Hub Project (WATH) was recently extended until
August 2007 and the scope was expanded by the United
States Agency for International Development (USAID).
Initiated in November 2002, WATH provides products and services
that enhance the ability of West African producers to sell to the
U.S. market under the U.S. Government’s Africa trade initiative.
This is giving the region that chance to take greater advantage of
the increased trading opportunities provided through the African
Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
The Hub acts as a central point where West Africans, U.S. Government
agencies, and bilateral and multilateral donors access information
on donor-funded trade enhancement, investment, and business development
activities in West Africa, including available training opportunities.
The Hub also provides direct technical assistance to West African
countries, including the region's private sector and civil society
organizations.
The newly expanded WATH will continue to work in the areas of:
|

|
AGOA Export Business Development
|
|

|
AGOA Support Services
|
|

|
Trade Capacity Building
|
|

|
Information Dissemination, Monitoring and Evaluation
|
In addition to the continued focus on ongoing trade-enhancing activities,
WATH will initiate new efforts in the areas of WTO and customs. WATH’s
new work in the area of customs modernization will be focused on
establishing linkages between the different ECOWAS Customs offices
through the promotion of the UNCTAD ASYCUDA system to create linkages,
harmonize data and increase access to information.
For over 20 years CARANA has been designing and implementing results-oriented
strategies for post-privatization economies in the areas of Trade
Enhancement, Public Sector Reform, Private Sector Growth, and Human
Capacity Development. Innovative global development solutions have
been provided in over 50 countries throughout Latin America, the
former Soviet Union, Eastern and Central Europe, Asia, the Middle
East, and Africa. CARANA maintains a staff of 200 professionals worldwide,
